Who Is Balen Shah? Rapper-Turned-Politician Challenging Nepal’s Political Establishment

Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen Shah, is a Nepali politician, structural engineer and former rapper who rose to national prominence after winning the Kathmandu mayoral election in 2022. Known for his outspoken style and strong social media presence, Balen has become one of the most influential young political figures in Nepal.

Early life and education

Balen Shah was born and raised in Kathmandu in a middle-class family. His father, Ram Narayan Shah, worked as a government ayurveda practitioner. As a child, Balen developed an interest in writing poems and creative expression, which later shaped his entry into music.

He studied civil engineering in Kathmandu and later pursued postgraduate studies in structural engineering in India, giving him a technical academic background before he stepped into public life.

From rap battles to public voice

Before entering politics, Balen was widely known in Nepal's hip-hop community. He gained popularity after participating in Raw Barz, a major Nepali rap battle platform, where his lyrics often criticised corruption, political stagnation and social inequality.

His songs and performances resonated strongly with young audiences, helping him build a following among Nepal's urban youth and migrant communities.

Breakthrough in politics

Balen's political rise came in 2022, when he contested the mayoral election in Kathmandu as an independent candidate. Despite competing against nominees from established parties, he won the election with 61,767 votes, becoming mayor of the capital city.

During his tenure, Balen gained attention for a series of bold decisions, including demolition drives targeting illegal structures and actions aimed at pressuring the central government over waste management and urban governance issues.

Entry into national politics

After serving as mayor, Balen resigned from the post and joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party to enter national politics. His move marked a major shift from city administration to the national stage.

He is now contesting elections against veteran leader and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli in the Jhapa-5 constituency, turning the race into one of the most closely watched political battles in Nepal.

Balen Shah's rise reflects a growing demand among young voters for political change. With millions of followers across social media platforms, he communicates directly with supporters and often bypasses traditional media channels.
