Who is Ahoo Daryaei? The Woman Arrested For Stripping In Iran
In Tehran, Iran, an incident involving Ahoo Daryaei has sparked international concern and debate over Iran's dress code enforcement. Daryaei, who is a separated mother of two, found herself at the center of a controversial situation on November 3 when she reportedly protested against the Islamic dress code by stripping down to her underwear on a street near Islamic Azad University. This act of defiance was said to be in reaction to harassment from the Basij paramilitary force, which allegedly involved the forceful removal of her headscarf and clothing.

Amnesty International has urgently called for Daryaei's release, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding her from any form of mistreatment and ensuring she has access to legal representation and can communicate with her family. The human rights organization has also demanded a thorough and impartial inquiry into the allegations of physical and sexual abuse she may have suffered during her detention. These allegations have added a layer of gravity to the incident, highlighting concerns regarding the treatment of protesters and detainees in Iran.
Following her protest, videos surfaced online showcasing Daryaei seated outside the university premises in her undergarments, later walking boldly along the street. This footage, disseminated by various Persian-language media outlets and organizations such as Amnesty International, drew significant public and international attention. Additionally, the Amir Kabir newsletter, a student-run social media channel in Iran, claimed that Daryaei experienced physical assault at the time of her arrest, contributing to the outcry over her treatment.
Reports concerning Daryaei's current state and the circumstances leading to her actions have been inconsistent. Amir Mahjoob, a university spokesperson, claimed on X (previously known as Twitter) that Daryaei was experiencing acute mental stress and had a psychological disorder, as determined after her detainment at a police station. Despite these claims, there is speculation about her whereabouts, with some suggesting she might be held at a psychiatric facility based on allegations of mental instability, while others fear she could be detained at an unknown location.
Iran's response to the incident has been varied, with the conservative Fars news agency reporting that Daryaei was dressed inappropriately and decided to strip after being cautioned to adhere to the dress code. The agency also cited witness accounts stating that the interaction between Daryaei and the security guards was non-confrontational, a narrative that contrasts sharply with other reports of the event.
