Global Health Alert: Beware of Fake Weight-Loss Drugs, WHO and Eli Lilly Advise

In a recent alert, the World Health Organisation (WHO) alongside pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Co, has issued a stern warning regarding the circulation of counterfeit versions of widely used weight-loss and diabetes medications. The WHO disclosed that since 2022, there have been multiple reports concerning the distribution of fake semaglutide, a crucial component found in Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Ozempic, across various global regions.

Alert on Counterfeit Weight-Loss Drugs

Eli Lilly, in an open letter, expressed its deep concerns over the increasing online sales and social media promotions of counterfeit or compounded versions of tirzepatide, the key ingredient in its products Mounjaro and Zepbound. The Indianapolis-headquartered firm emphasized its status as the sole legitimate supplier of these medications, clarifying that it does not distribute tirzepatide to compounding pharmacies, wellness centers, or online retail platforms.

The company further cautioned that any version of its drugs being advertised or sold online that claims to be tirzepatide but is not branded as Mounjaro or Zepbound is unauthorized by Eli Lilly and has not received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This announcement mirrors previous warnings issued by Novo Nordisk regarding counterfeit versions of its medications.

To safeguard against these fraudulent activities, WHO advises patients to only use prescriptions obtained from licensed physicians when purchasing these medications. Additionally, the agency recommends avoiding purchases from unfamiliar sources to prevent the risks associated with counterfeit drugs.

This warning highlights a growing concern within the pharmaceutical industry about the dangers posed by counterfeit medications. Patients are urged to remain vigilant and ensure that they are obtaining their medications from reputable and authorized sources to avoid potential health risks.
