Where Is Melania? Trump's Wife Keeps A Low Profile Amid Controversy And Campaign

As the 2024 US election campaign kicks off in Iowa and Donald Trump's Super Tuesday victory party, Melania Trump has noticeably been absent from major events. Her low profile has raised questions among reporters, who asked if she planned to join her husband on the campaign trail. Her response? "Stay tuned."

Melania didn't accompany Trump during his month-long trial in New York, missing the guilty verdict and his subsequent remarks at Trump Tower. She also didn't attend her husband's 78th birthday party on June 14, organized by his fan club, nor any recent campaign rallies.

"This is unusual," said Katherine Jellison, a professor of history at Ohio University who studies first ladies. "Melania Trump has always been reluctant to follow the traditional public role of a politician's wife."

Jellison noted that as first lady, Melania kept a low profile during her husband's losing 2020 presidential campaign. However, she added that everything the Trumps do seems to be against the standard playbook of how candidates and spouses behave.

For instance, male politicians often rely on their wives to reach out to female voters. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's wife, Casey DeSantis, has traveled with him, given interviews, and formed a coalition called Mamas for DeSantis. Similarly, Vivek Ramaswamy's wife, Dr. Apoorva Ramaswamy, has appeared with their two young children to discuss the importance of family.

However, Melania's office has declined multiple requests for comment, and her only public statement came when she announced that her son Barron Trump, 18, was chosen as a state delegate for the Republican National Convention. She explained that he couldn't attend due to prior commitments.

Reporters repeatedly asked Trump "Where's Melania?" during his felony trial, but he remained silent. Trump allies claimed it was a delicate time for the family, as some of his testimony accused him of having sex with porn actress Stormy Daniels in July 2006 - about four months after Melania gave birth to Barron.

Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen testified that Trump didn't seem to care about how this would harm his marriage more than he cared about it damaging his 2016 presidential ambitions.

Despite Melania's social media absence after her husband was convicted on 34 felony counts, Trump's elder sons quickly condemned the verdict, and his daughter Ivanka posted a photo of herself with a younger Trump and captioned it "I love you dad." His younger daughter Tiffany also accompanied him to the courthouse for the trial's closing arguments.

"I think it's very hard for her," Trump told Fox News about his wife after the verdict. "I mean, she's fine. But she has to read all this crap," he added.

Trump often mentions Melania and shares conversations between the two, indicating that she remains involved behind the scenes.

Larry Snowden, president of the "Club 47" fan group, last saw Melania at a February gala hosted by the "Trumpettes," a group of female supporters. He described her as "so charming" and said she was happy and accommodating.

Snowden expects Melania to make key speeches throughout the campaign but also thinks Trump will continue to be protective of her.
