What Is xAI? The Newest OpenAI Contender Making Headlines

The AI landscape is abuzz with the emergence of a new player: xAI. Spearheaded by none other than Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla, Twitter, and SpaceX, this tech firm is making waves with its commitment to developing an innovative AI tool known as "TruthGPT." Later, Elon Musk's TruthGPT project changed its name to xAI.

Team members behind xAI are former affiliations at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Twitter, and Tesla. Their collective experience encompasses involvement in noteworthy projects, including DeepMind's AlphaCode, as well as contributions to the development of OpenAI's ChatGPT, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4 chatbots.

So, what's the fuss about xAI, and why is it in the spotlight?

What Is xAI? The Newest OpenAI Contender Making Headlines

Musk recently announced that his new artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, is gearing up to release its first AI model to a select group.

The announcement, made via Musk's Twitter account, has generated a significant buzz within the tech community and beyond. In his tweet, Musk expressed great optimism about the capabilities of this AI, stating that, "In some important respects, it is the best that currently exists." This statement has left many wondering about the potential impact and capabilities of this new AI.

Elon Musk introduced xAI back in July, stating that its mission is to "understand the true nature of the universe." The company is led by Musk himself and includes a team of experts with experience at other major AI players, such as OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and Google's DeepMind.

The primary mission of xAI is to challenge the supremacy of massive language models like OpenAI's GPT 3.5, GPT 4, and Google's LaMDA. Elon Musk's involvement in the AI realm is not a recent development. Back in 2015, he played a pivotal role in co-founding OpenAI, the company that currently owns ChatGPT. Musk served as one of the original board members until his departure in 2018.

Reports suggest that xAI Corp was officially incorporated in the state of Nevada, USA, in March.

How Does TruthGPT Differ from ChatGPT, and What Sets It Apart?

Elon Musk's vision for AI centers on ensuring its safety for humanity. He has consistently emphasized the potential risks AI poses to mankind, even going as far as to describe it as a possible "civilization destroyer." To align with his vision, xAI's AI models will seek to uncover the "true nature of the universe."

In contrast to AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Bard, which are equipped with programmed moral constraints, TruthGPT will chart a distinct course. Musk envisions a chatbot that is "maximally curious" rather than artificially confined by predefined limits. Instead of adhering to a rigid code of ethics, xAI's forthcoming chatbot will strive to "comprehend the genuine essence of the universe," as Elon Musk revealed on Twitter Spaces. He further emphasized that it will be "pro-humanity," as he finds humanity to be profoundly captivating.
