What Is Trump's Deep State Battle, Its Connection To Biden, And How Will It Impact The 2024 US Election?

Donald Trump, who initiated his third presidential campaign last March, has described the 2024 contest to unseat US President Joe Biden as "the final battle."

Addressing a rally in Waco, Texas, Trump asserted that this race would determine whether "the deep state destroys America or we destroy the deep state," as reported by Hindustan Times.

Understanding the Deep State

The term "deep state" is used by foreign policy experts and political scientists to describe influential networks within civil society and government. Originally applied to countries like Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, where generals and spies have significant influence over political leaders, the term has since been adopted to discuss the US government.

Origins and Evolution of the Term

The concept of a deep state in America emerged from a political conspiracy theory. It suggests that a covert network of federal employees, especially within the FBI and CIA, collaborates with influential financial and business figures to exercise power alongside or within the democratically elected government, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The term was first used in the 1990s to describe perceived deep state activities in Turkey but gained prominence in the US during the Obama administration and more so under Trump's presidency.

Trump's Battle Against the Deep State

Trump's narrative around the deep state became particularly prominent when special counsel Robert Mueller began investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election. Trump accused leakers and whistleblowers within the US intelligence community of undermining his administration, claiming that a deep state conspiracy was at play.

During his presidency, Trump often used the deep state theory to attack his critics. Many January 6 Capitol rioters were influenced by conspiracy theories, such as those propagated by QAnon, which posited that Trump was battling a clandestine deep state.

Allegations and Conspiracies

Recently, social media has been flooded with conspiracy theories following an assassination attempt on Trump. Some theories suggested the attack was staged, while others blamed the CIA, Mike Pence, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama without providing evidence. These narratives garnered significant attention online.

Biden and the Deep State

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova claimed that the US media and the deep state have long concealed Biden's actual mental status. This statement followed an incident where Biden mistakenly addressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as "President Putin."

Russian propagandists have also alleged that both Democrats and Ukrainians are attempting to kill Trump, with former New York Times correspondent John Varoli asserting that the Democratic party was behind the assassination attempt. Such claims were made on Russian state media and have been dismissed as baseless by experts, as per media reports.

US Political Reactions

In the US, Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama highlighted concerns about Biden's competence, alleging that Democratic leaders and the deep state control the President. He accused figures like Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and former President Obama of leading the country, with significant influence from National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Expert Opinions

Experts largely dismiss the deep-state conspiracy theories. Megan Squire from the Southern Poverty Law Center noted that political violence often spawns conspiracy theories and false narratives. David Rohde, author of In Deep: The FBI, the CIA, and the Truth About America's Deep State, argued that the term "deep state" is both a real phenomenon and a distraction used by Trump and his allies to deflect criticism, as per US media reports.

While the notion of a deep state has been used to explain various political dynamics and controversies, experts caution against taking such conspiracy theories at face value. The deep state concept, particularly as used in American political discourse, reflects a complex interplay of power, perception, and political strategy.
