The aircraft - the Boeing E-4B Nightwatch - is one of the most secretive and advanced planes operated by the United States Air Force. What Is the 'Doomsday Plane'?

Often referred to as the "Flying Pentagon", the aircraft is officially known as the National Airborne Operations Centre (NAOC). Its primary purpose is to ensure the US government and military leadership can continue functioning during the worst possible crises.

The aircraft can carry around 112 personnel, including senior military officials and potentially the US president. From inside the plane, commanders can direct military forces, issue emergency war orders and maintain communication with troops worldwide.

The Boeing E-4B is specially designed to survive extreme scenarios, including nuclear blasts and electromagnetic pulses that could disable normal communication systems.

The aircraft acts as a backup command centre for the US government, allowing the chain of command to remain intact even during catastrophic attacks.
