Major firms such as Microsoft, Amazon, and JPMorgan quickly advised employees holding H-1B visas to stay within the US. Those currently outside the country were urged to return before September 21. What is the O-1 visa?

The O-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa designed for individuals who can demonstrate "extraordinary ability" in their field, or for those with a proven record of exceptional achievement in the motion picture or television industry. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the O-1 visa has two primary categories:

O-1A: For individuals with extraordinary ability in science, education, business, or athletics.

O-1B: For individuals in the arts, or those with significant accomplishments in film or television.

The O-1 visa is typically issued for up to three years and can be extended as needed. Importantly, unlike the H-1B, there is no annual cap on O-1 visas. Approval rates are also much higher-around 93% compared to roughly 37% for H-1B visas.

Another option: the EB-1A visa

For top-tier achievers, the EB-1A visa-often called the "Einstein visa"-is another alternative. This visa is reserved for individuals of extraordinary ability who have achieved national or international recognition. Accomplishments that qualify could include winning a Pulitzer Prize, an Oscar, or an Olympic medal.
