West Virginia Shelter Seeks Immediate Help for Dogs After Truck Crash

In a distressing turn of events, the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association in Charleston, West Virginia, has issued an urgent call for assistance following a significant incident on March 28. A rental truck collided with the shelter's premises while cleaning operations were underway, causing substantial structural damage. This accident has not only compromised the building's integrity but also placed the resident animals in immediate danger.

Urgent Foster Call for Shelter Dogs

The collision resulted in an injury to one dog and left the vehicle embedded in the shelter's wall, which is now precariously supporting the damaged structure. The situation has escalated to a critical point, posing a severe risk to the safety of the animals housed within. In response to this emergency, the shelter has appealed to the community for help, urging people to foster dogs until they can be rehomed permanently.

Angie Gillenwater, the Human Association Community Engagement Manager, revealed to the Charleston Gazette-Mail that the driver of the truck was at the shelter to reclaim his pet when the accident occurred. Following the incident, power to the facility was disconnected as a safety measure. At the time of the crash, the shelter was operating at emergency capacity levels, with approximately 120 out of 250 animals available for adoption.

The shelter's plea for support has resonated widely on social media, with their Facebook post being shared nearly 5,000 times. Many community members have expressed their willingness to assist by fostering a dog in need. The shelter has also opened its doors for donations to aid in this critical time.

Due to the ongoing safety concerns and necessary repairs, the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association has announced that it will remain closed to visitors until further notice. However, they emphasize that their primary focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of their animals and have called upon the community's support to help navigate through this challenging period.

As investigations by local police into the incident continue, the shelter is working diligently to manage the situation and provide for its animals amidst these trying circumstances. The community's response highlights a collective effort to safeguard these vulnerable animals and underscores the importance of compassion and action in times of need.
