Rocket Barrages from Lebanon Result in Seven Fatalities in Israel's Deadliest Attacks
Seven individuals lost their lives in northern Israel on Thursday due to rocket attacks from Lebanon, according to authorities. The strikes targeted agricultural zones near the border and the city of Haifa. This incident marks the most lethal series of attacks from Lebanon since Israel's military incursion earlier this month. The violence coincided with US diplomats visiting the region to advocate for ceasefires in Lebanon and Gaza.

The conflict along Israel's northern border intensified last month when Israel launched significant airstrikes across Lebanon, resulting in the death of Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and his deputies. Israeli ground forces entered southern Lebanon on October 1. Over the past year, Israel's campaign against Hezbollah has resulted in 2,800 deaths in Lebanon, nearly 13,000 injuries, and significant damage to towns near the border.
Hezbollah's Rocket Attacks Intensify
Hezbollah has been launching numerous rockets, drones, and missiles into Israel since Hamas attacked from Gaza on October 7. This has led to strong Israeli retaliatory strikes. Both Hezbollah and Hamas receive support from Iran, a regional adversary of Israel. However, Hezbollah did not immediately claim responsibility for Thursday's rocket fire.
The escalation has forced 60,000 Israelis to evacuate from border communities. Despite being displaced for over a year, they have not returned home. On Thursday, rockets hit Metula, Israel's northernmost town, killing four foreign workers and an Israeli farmer. Metula residents had evacuated in October 2023; only security personnel and agricultural workers remain.
Impact on Civilians and Agriculture
The Hotline for Refugees and Migrants criticised authorities for endangering foreign workers by allowing them to work near the border without adequate protection. Later that day, another barrage of about 25 rockets struck an olive grove near Haifa. Magen David Adom reported that a 30-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman died in this attack while harvesting olives.
Agricultural areas along Israel's border are closed military zones patrolled by troops. Entry is allowed only with official permission. For those still residing there, missile interceptions by Israel's Iron Dome system and sirens warning of incoming rockets are part of daily life.
Calls for Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Conflict
Amos Hochstein, a special adviser to President Biden on the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, is advocating for a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Eitan Davidi, mayor of Margaliot where air raid sirens were frequent on Thursday, expressed opposition to any agreement that might strengthen Hezbollah at their borders.
Hezbollah's new leader Sheikh Naim Kassem stated in a video message that the group will continue fighting until acceptable ceasefire terms are offered. He claimed they have recovered from recent setbacks blamed on Israel and said their capabilities remain strong for a prolonged conflict.
Evacuations and Humanitarian Concerns
The Israeli military warned more areas of southern Lebanon to evacuate as airstrikes killed eight people on Thursday according to Lebanon's National News Agency. Thousands have fled Baalbek and surrounding areas following these warnings. Jean Fakhry from Deir al-Ahmar reported heavy traffic as people tried to escape.
In Deir al-Ahmar shelters, families continued arriving with luggage on Thursday. Zahraa Younis from a village near Baalbek said their homes were destroyed: "We came with nothing — no clothes or anything else."
