Watch | PM Modi Unveils Indian-Funded Hospital In Bhutan: A Milestone In Bilateral Relations

The Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Mother and Child Hospital in Thimphu was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Bhutan, along with his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay on Saturday.

Prior to the inauguration, gratitude was expressed by Tobgay to the Indian government for fully funding the construction of the hospital.

In Thimphu, it was stated by Prime Minister of Bhutan Dasho Tshering Tobgay that "I join all the people of Bhutan in congratulating my friend PM Modi for receiving the highest civilian award in Bhutan. He is the first foreigner to receive it so we are very proud and happy... In a while, PM Modi is going to inaugurate this wonderful hospital... it has been fully funded by the Govt of India..."

How did India help construct the hospital?

The construction and developmental costs of the state-of-the-art, 150-bed Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuk Mother and Child Hospital were borne by India in two phases. In phase one, a part of the hospital was constructed at a cost of Rs 22 crore and has been operational since 2019.

Meanwhile, the second phase of the hospital was inaugurated on March 23, as part of the 12th Five Year Plan, at a cost of Rs 119 crore.

The newly constructed hospital will add value to the quality of mother and child health services in Bhutan. The new facility will house state-of-the-art facilities for Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Anesthesiology, Operation Theatre, Neonatal Intensive Care, and Pediatric Intensive Care. ​

It was stated by Prime Minister of Bhutan Dasho Tshering Tobgay that Bhutan was honored to receive PM Modi on a two-day state visit. The two-day state visit couldn't have gone any better. He was welcomed with open hearts by every citizen of Bhutan. This historic visit is going to further strengthen the already strong relations between the two countries.
