WATCH Video | SpaceX Polaris Astronauts Historic First Private Spacewalk
Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis are about to become the first private astronauts to conduct a spacewalk, marking a significant milestone in the Polaris Dawn mission funded by Isaacman.
An internet entrepreneur and a SpaceX engineer are set to make history as the first private astronauts to walk in space.
Jared Isaacman, who founded the online payment company Shift4, has funded this mission called Polaris Dawn. He will spend a few minutes outside the SpaceX Dragon capsule, followed by SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis.

The mission includes two other astronauts: Scott Poteet, a former Air Force pilot working for Isaacman, and SpaceX engineer Anna Menon. They will stay inside the capsule to support Isaacman and Gillis during their spacewalk. Until now, only professional astronauts have conducted spacewalks, often for maintenance or experiments on the International Space Station.
Spacewalk Challenges and Risks
Spacewalks are among the most dangerous aspects of space travel. Spacesuits act as tiny spacecraft, providing life support and temperature control. Astronauts face extreme temperature changes in space's vacuum. Issues during spacewalks can be severe; for instance, in 2013, Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano nearly drowned when water leaked into his helmet from his suit's cooling system.
Today's spacewalk is reminiscent of early space missions. Although SpaceX's new spacesuits appear modern, they lack self-contained life support systems. The astronauts will receive oxygen through umbilicals, similar to the Gemini missions of the 1960s. Isaacman and Gillis will remain close to the hatch, holding onto special rails named Skywalker by SpaceX.
Significance for SpaceX
If successful, this mission will mark a significant achievement for SpaceX. Spacesuits are crucial for future space travel ambitions, including potential missions to the Moon and Mars. This milestone could pave the way for more private individuals to experience spacewalks.
Spacewalks on the International Space Station typically last several hours and follow strict schedules with little time for sightseeing. However, today's mission offers a brief but groundbreaking opportunity for private astronauts to step outside their spacecraft.
Jared Isaacman floats just below the hatch of his SpaceX dragon capsule while he awaits the first private spacewalk.
This mission is a throwback to earlier days of space exploration while also pushing boundaries for private space travel. The success of Polaris Dawn could inspire more private missions and expand human presence in outer space.
The involvement of private individuals like Isaacman and Gillis highlights a new era where non-professional astronauts can participate in activities once reserved for government-trained professionals. This shift could democratise access to space and foster innovation in commercial spaceflight.
The Polaris Dawn mission represents a blend of historical homage and forward-looking ambition. By combining modern technology with tried-and-true methods from past missions, it aims to achieve new milestones in human space exploration.
The conclusion of this mission will provide valuable insights into how private companies can contribute to future space endeavors. It underscores the growing role of commercial entities in advancing human capabilities beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
