WATCH | Bangladesh In Chaos: Protesters Storm Presidential Palace Amid Widespread Violence

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the capital Dhaka amid violent clashes as massive crowds of protesters demanded her ouster. According to a source, "She and her sister have left Ganabhaban (the Prime Minister's official residence) for a safer place." The source added, "She wanted to record a speech. But she could not get an opportunity to do that."

The unrest reached a boiling point as hundreds of thousands of protesters defied a curfew, flooding the streets of Dhaka and later storming the Prime Minister's residence. Visuals from the scene showed jubilant crowds running into the residence, waving to cameras in celebration.

Despite soldiers and police setting up barricades with armored vehicles and barbed wire around Ms. Hasina's office, the overwhelming number of protesters tore down the barriers. Local media estimated that as many as 400,000 people were on the streets, though this figure remains unverified.

In response to the chaos, Bangladesh's army chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced that an interim government would be formed following the prime minister's resignation. "We will form an interim government," he stated.

The violence on Sunday alone resulted in at least 98 deaths, bringing the total death toll to over 300 since the protests erupted last month.

Initially sparked by opposition to civil service job quotas, the demonstrations have grown into a broader anti-government movement, with increasing calls for the 76-year-old Prime Minister to step down.

The movement has gained widespread support across various sectors of Bangladeshi society, including film stars, musicians, and singers.

Songs rallying public support for the protests have gone viral on social media. The protesters had earlier dismissed Ms. Hasina's invitation for dialogue, unifying their demands around a single goal: her resignation.
