Volcanic eruption shuts three more airports in Indonesia
Jakarta, July 17: Three more airports have been closed in Indonesia due to volcanic eruptions. The closure has hit thousands of tourists at other airports including at Surabaya, the second largest city of Indonesia, BBC reported.
Earlier authorities decided to shut down airports in Bali and the neighboring island of Lombok last week as Mount Raung in East Java continued to spew ash into one of the world's most crowded flight paths.
Closure of airports in Indonesia has resulted into chaos among thousands of Indonesians who were set to head to home to see their families on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Indonesia is home to dozens of active volcanoes that sit along the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. Volcanic eruptions sometimes disrupt flights in the country, but have never been linked to aviation accidents.
Volcanic ash can be dangerous for planes as it can get sucked into engines and melts.
It could then turn into a kind of molten glass that coats the inside of engines and affects fuel flow, which can cause engines to shut off.
