Mother of Virginia School Shooter Sentenced to Prison

Deja Taylor, the mother of the six-year-old who shot his teacher in Virginia, has been sentenced to two years in prison for felony child neglect. The sentence is harsher than what was recommended in a plea deal and comes after Taylor was previously sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for marijuana possession while owning a gun.

In a Virginia courtroom, Deja Taylor, the mother of a six-year-old boy who critically injured his teacher in a classroom shooting, faced sentencing for her role in the incident. Nearly a year after her son used her unsecured gun to shoot his first-grade teacher, Abby Zwerner, Taylor was held accountable for her actions.

Mothers Negligence Leads to Harsh Sentence in Virginia School Shooting Case

Stiffer Sentence Reflects Severity of Neglect

Circuit Court Judge Christopher Papile disregarded the recommended six-month sentence jointly proposed by prosecutors and Taylor's lawyers. Instead, he imposed a harsher sentence of two years in prison, recognizing the gravity of Taylor's negligence. This sentence adds to the 21 months of federal imprisonment Taylor received for marijuana possession while owning a firearm, resulting in a combined punishment of almost four years behind bars.

Unsecured Gun Led to Tragic Shooting

Taylor's son accessed her 9mm handgun by climbing onto a drawer and reaching the top of a dresser where she had left it in her purse. Despite her initial claim of securing the gun with a trigger lock, investigators found no evidence of such a device. The six-year-old concealed the weapon in his backpack and later his pocket before shooting Zwerner in front of her horrified students.

Plea Deal and Mitigating Circumstances

As part of a plea deal, Taylor pleaded guilty to felony child neglect, leading to the dismissal of a misdemeanor charge for recklessly storing a firearm. She also admitted guilt to the federal marijuana-weapons charge, as investigators discovered nearly an ounce of marijuana in her bedroom after the shooting. Taylor's attorneys presented mitigating circumstances, including miscarriages, postpartum depression, and a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, a mental health condition.

Remorse and Apologies

In an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America," Taylor expressed her sense of responsibility and apologized to Zwerner. She acknowledged her role as a parent and her willingness to take accountability for her son's actions. During her federal sentencing, Taylor's attorney read a statement conveying her deep and lasting remorse.

Teacher's Physical and Emotional Trauma

The bullet fired from Taylor's gun caused significant injuries to Zwerner, striking her left hand and upper left chest, resulting in broken bones and a punctured lung. Despite her efforts to protect her students by ushering them into the hallway, she collapsed in the school's office. Zwerner spent nearly two weeks in the hospital and underwent multiple surgeries to restore mobility to her left hand. The physical and emotional trauma she endured has left her struggling with daily tasks and has forced her to leave her teaching career.

Lawsuit Against School District

Zwerner has filed a $40 million lawsuit against Newport News Public Schools, alleging that administrators disregarded multiple warnings about the boy's possession of a gun. She claims that her life has been profoundly impacted, resulting in financial losses and a loss of her sense of self. Zwerner now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety, and requires ongoing therapy to cope with the emotional scars.

The sentencing of Deja Taylor serves as a reminder of the profound consequences of firearm negligence and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives. As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victim, supporting her recovery, and addressing the systemic issues that allowed such a tragic incident to occur.
