Violent Clash In Gurudwara In Germany: 11 Injured As Guns Fired, Kirpans, Knives Drawn

At least 11 people were injured after a violent confrontation erupted inside a gurdwara in the Duisburg area of Moers, Germany, prompting a major police operation.

Footage circulating on social media shows chaotic scenes within the religious building, where two groups appear to be engaged in a physical altercation. The clips show that sharp weapons, including knives and kirpans, were used during the incident.

The incident occurred on Sunday. According to reports in German media, over 40 peoplewere involved in the clash at the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in North Rhine-Westphalia. Police responded in force, deploying nearly 100 officers, including a specialist tactical unit (SEK) from Düsseldorf. A helicopter was also used to monitor the situation from the air amid initial concerns that shots had been fired.

The violence is believed to have broken out shortly before a scheduled prayer service and escalated rapidly. A 56-year-old eyewitness told local media that pepper spray was used at the outset, followed by what appeared to be a firearm discharge. "Shortly before the prayer service, attackers used pepper spray, then one fired a pistol. I also saw knives," the witness said.

While the exact cause of the clash has not been officially confirmed, early indications point to an internal dispute within the gurdwara community. Witnesses suggested tensions between former and current committee members, reportedly centred on governance issues, financial control, and the election of a new management board.

Describing the background to the unrest, the same witness said disagreements had been ongoing for some time. "It mainly concerns influence and who has authority within the temple," they added, noting that disputes over community funds may also have played a role.
Other eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the violence unfolded. Several worshippers reportedly fled the building in fear, with some leaving barefoot in their haste to escape.
Emergency services treated the injured at the scene. Most sustained head injuries, while a smaller number were reported to have suffered minor wounds.

Police cordoned off the area and later entered the premises amid concerns about a possible armed suspect. However, no gunman was found inside the building. Investigators did recover cartridge cases, raising the possibility that a blank-firing weapon may have been used, though no firearm has yet been located. At least one person has been detained.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into both the incident and its underlying causes. A police spokesperson stated that enquiries are ongoing and "proceeding in all directions".

The incident has drawn criticism from members of the Sikh community, with several voices expressing dismay over violence occurring within a place of worship.
