Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra Performs 'Vande Mataram' for PM Modi in Austria

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was serenaded by a Viennese philharmonic orchestra, led by India-born conductor Vijay Upadhyaya, with a rendition of Vande Mataram. The performance took place during Modi's official two-day visit to Austria, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 41 years. This visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Austria.

Vande Mataram for Modi by Viennese Orchestra

Austria is renowned for its rich architectural heritage and its association with legendary composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Vienna, the nation's cultural hub, played host to Modi's visit. The prime minister described his trip as historic and special. He was particularly moved by the orchestral performance at his hotel, which he praised as excellent.

Vibrant Musical Culture

Modi shared his experience on X, stating, "Austria is known for its vibrant musical culture. I got a glimpse of it thanks to this amazing rendition of Vande Mataram!" The video of the performance was also shared in his post. The University of Vienna Philharmonic, which performed for Modi, comprises over 800 musicians and singers. They play in two orchestras and eight choirs, making it one of the largest music communities globally.

Grammy Award-winning musician Ricky Kej responded to Modi's post on X, highlighting the conductor's Indian roots. "The conductor is an Indian who makes all of us proud - Vijay Upadhyaya, originally from Lucknow. He is the director of the prestigious Vienna University Philharmonic among other international orchestras and founded the India National Youth Orchestra. He is a proud Indian and often conducts Indian-styled music internationally," Kej said.

Diplomatic Discussions

The prime minister arrived in Vienna from Moscow after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin. During his stay in Austria, Modi held talks with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer. They exchanged in-depth assessments of recent developments in Europe and West Asia. Both leaders emphasized the importance of democratic countries like India and Austria working together to promote international and regional peace and prosperity.

Vande Mataram, composed by author Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, became a rallying cry for Indian nationalists fighting for independence from colonial rule. The song's rendition by the Vienna University Philharmonic was a significant highlight of Modi's visit.

The University of Vienna Philharmonic's website notes that it is one of the largest music communities worldwide, consisting of more than 800 musicians and singers who perform in two orchestras and eight choirs.

Modi's visit to Austria was at the invitation of Chancellor Karl Nehammer. This trip marks a significant milestone in Indo-Austrian relations, celebrating 75 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The prime minister's engagement with Austria underscores the importance of cultural exchange and collaboration between nations. His appreciation for the musical performance highlights India's deep connection to its cultural heritage while fostering international goodwill.
