Venezuela Withdraws Brazil's Role in Protecting Diplomatic Missions

Venezuela has withdrawn Brazil's permission to oversee Argentina's diplomatic missions in the country. The government claims that anti-government activists, who had taken refuge in the Argentine ambassador's residence, were planning terrorist activities from there. This decision was communicated to Brazil on Saturday and is effective immediately.

Venezuela-Brazil Diplomatic Shift

Allegations of Terrorist Plotting

Venezuela's foreign ministry stated that it had to act based on alleged evidence of plotting by those seeking asylum at Argentina's diplomatic mission. However, the ministry has not shared this evidence publicly. Among those who sought refuge was Magalli Meda, the former campaign chief for opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Diplomatic Tensions

In response to these events, President Nicolás Maduro severed diplomatic ties with Argentina's right-wing government led by President Javier Milei. Argentina had previously asked Brazil to represent its interests and protect the asylum seekers in Venezuela. There has been no immediate reaction from either Argentina or Brazil regarding this development.

Since Friday, SEBIN political police armoured vehicles have been stationed outside the Argentine ambassador's residence in Caracas. Electricity to the residence has also been cut off. Meda has used social media to express her concerns about a potential raid aimed at arresting her and other government opponents.

The situation remains tense as Venezuela continues to accuse the asylum seekers of plotting against the government without providing concrete evidence. The international community is closely watching these developments, awaiting further responses from Argentina and Brazil.
