Vatican Officials Gaza Comments Spark Diplomatic Tension with Israel

Israel has formally expressed its displeasure after a high-ranking Vatican official referred to the Israeli military operation in Gaza as carnage and questioned its proportionality. The Israeli Embassy to the Holy See deemed the remarks made by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vaticans secretary of state, as regrettable.

Tensions between the Vatican and Israel have escalated following critical remarks made by a senior Vatican official regarding Israel's military operations in Gaza. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, sparked controversy by condemning the "carnage" in Gaza and questioning Israel's claim of self-defense. In response, the Israeli Embassy to the Holy See expressed regret over Parolin's statements, asserting that he had disregarded relevant facts in assessing the legitimacy of Israel's actions.

Vatican-Israel Clash: Diplomatic Tensions Flare Over Gaza Comments

Parolin's Condemnation of Gaza Conflict

Speaking at a reception on Tuesday, Cardinal Parolin denounced the Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7 and all forms of antisemitism. However, he challenged Israel's justification of its military operation as self-defense, arguing that the level of casualties in Gaza could not be considered proportionate. Parolin emphasized that while Israel has the right to self-defense, the disproportionate response resulted in the deaths of approximately 30,000 people.

Israeli Embassy's Response

The Israeli Embassy to the Holy See swiftly responded to Parolin's comments, issuing a statement expressing regret over his remarks. The embassy asserted that Parolin had failed to consider the relevant facts and circumstances that justified Israel's actions. The statement highlighted that Hamas had transformed the Gaza Strip into a significant terrorist base, and the Israeli armed forces were operating in accordance with international law. The embassy also drew comparisons to other conflicts in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, suggesting that the proportion of Palestinian civilian casualties to "terrorists" killed was relatively lower in the Gaza conflict.

Vatican Newspaper's Support for Parolin

In a show of support for Parolin, the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano published a front-page editorial on Thursday titled "Stop the Carnage." Vatican editorial director Andrea Tornielli reiterated the Vatican's position, emphasizing that the situation in Gaza could not be dismissed as collateral damage from the fight against terrorism. Tornielli quoted a Holocaust survivor, Edith Bruck, who criticized the Israeli government's response and linked it to the rise in antisemitic acts against Jews worldwide.

Rabbis Thank Pope for Letter to Israeli Jews

Amidst the tensions, the Vatican newspaper also reported on a group of rabbis who wrote a letter to Pope Francis expressing gratitude for his recent letter to Israeli Jews. The rabbis commended the Catholic Church's commitment to transforming its relationship with the Jewish people from one of rivalry and misunderstanding to one of friendship.

The Vatican-Israel tensions over the Gaza conflict highlight the complexities of balancing the right to self-defense with the need for proportionality and the protection of civilian lives. The exchange of statements between the Israeli Embassy and the Vatican reflects the ongoing challenges in finding common ground and fostering understanding between the two entities.
