Vanuatu Earthquake: 14 Fatalities and Hundreds Injured Following 7.3 Magnitude Tremor

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck near Vanuatu, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and injuring hundreds more. The quake caused extensive destruction across the South Pacific island nation. Rescue teams worked tirelessly through the night to reach individuals trapped beneath debris. The Red Cross, citing government sources, reported the death toll early Wednesday. Communication disruptions have delayed official updates, and phone services remain unavailable.

Vanuatu Earthquake Causes Casualties and Damage

The earthquake occurred just before 1 p.m., originating 57 kilometres deep and 30 kilometres west of Port Vila, Vanuatu's largest city. This group of 80 islands is home to approximately 330,000 residents. A tsunami warning was issued but was cancelled less than two hours later. The quake was followed by significant aftershocks. Katie Greenwood from the Red Cross in Fiji stated on X that over 200 people were injured. She also noted damage to Vanuatu's main hospital and compromised water supplies.

Infrastructure Damage

The UN humanitarian office reported that road damage has severely restricted access to both the airport and seaport, potentially hindering aid delivery efforts. Residents were advised to avoid coastlines for at least 24 hours until monitoring systems for tsunamis and earthquakes are fully operational again.

Social media footage depicted ongoing rescue operations for those trapped in collapsed buildings, including a three-story structure that had fallen onto its lower levels. Amanda Laithwaite mentioned her husband was among those searching for eight people they could hear trapped inside, though progress was slow. Michael Thompson, her husband, shared on Facebook that three individuals were rescued overnight.

Rescue Efforts

Thompson's video showed a dust-covered woman on a gurney as army personnel and civilians used tools and shovels to assist in the rescue efforts. Journalist Dan McGarry noted that Vanuatu lacks the capacity to handle mass casualty events. He visited Vila Central Hospital, where crowds gathered outside as doctors worked swiftly at a triage centre set up outside the emergency ward.

A building housing several diplomatic missions in Port Vila, including those of the US, UK, France, and New Zealand, sustained significant damage. The US Embassy confirmed via Facebook that all staff were safe but announced the building's closure until further notice. This office opened in July as part of US efforts to expand its presence in the Pacific region.

Flight Disruptions

New Zealand's foreign ministry accounted for all but two embassy staff members, while Australia's foreign ministry confirmed its workers' safety. McGarry reported a "massive landslide" at the international shipping terminal likely to hinder recovery efforts. The airport runway also suffered damage.

Airlines in Australia and the Pacific cancelled or paused flights scheduled for Wednesday pending updates on the airport's status. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced on X that her government is "preparing to deploy immediate assistance to Vanuatu from tomorrow," including urban search and rescue teams and emergency medical units.

Vanuatu is situated on a subduction zone where the Indo-Australia tectonic plate moves beneath the Pacific Plate, making earthquakes above magnitude 6 relatively common. The country's buildings are designed to withstand such seismic events.
