Prior to her role as Associate Attorney General, Gupta served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the oldest and largest coalition of non-partisan civil rights organizations in the United States. She also held positions as the Deputy Legal Director and the Director of the Center for Justice at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Gupta's educational background includes a Bachelor's degree from Yale University and a law degree from New York University School of Law. She later returned to her alma mater as a professor, teaching a civil rights litigation clinic for several years.
