Incident Details

The boy was alone in the car when he found the gun under a seat and shot himself in the head. Doug Shields, who was nearby refuelling his vehicle, heard the gunshot followed by a woman's scream. He rushed to the scene and heard the mother say that her son had discovered the firearm under the seat.

Previous Similar Incident

This tragic event follows another recent incident in Utah where a 5-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with a handgun at his home in Santaquin, located about 65 miles south of Salt Lake City. Both incidents highlight concerns about firearm safety and accessibility to children.

Legal Context

According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Utah does not have laws penalising individuals for failing to secure an unattended firearm accessible to unsupervised minors. The state also lacks requirements for storing unattended firearms in a specific manner or mandating locking devices with firearm sales.

Ongoing Investigation

The Lehi City Police Department stated that the shooting appeared "unintentional and self-inflicted." Investigators are still determining whether the gun's safety mechanism was engaged at any point. No charges are currently pending against the boy's mother, and the investigation continues.

In another related incident, a 4-year-old girl in St. Louis died from a gunshot wound while in a house with three other children under ten years old and no adults present. Authorities are investigating who was handling the gun at that time.

These incidents underscore the critical need for responsible firearm storage and supervision to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
