Ustad Nishat Khan Remembers Zakir Hussain: A Unique Musical Legacy
In a heartfelt tribute, Ustad Nishat Khan honoured Zakir Hussain, describing him as a musician who uniquely embraced global rhythms. The sitar maestro shared his sentiments in London, reflecting on the tabla legend's enduring influence. Hussain, who passed away at 73 in San Francisco, left an indelible mark on the world of music.

Ustad Nishat Khan, who shared numerous performances with Hussain since their childhood, expressed disbelief over his passing. "It was just unbelievable. Zakir Bhai and I go back many, many years; we have known each other since our childhood as we were also neighbours in Bombay," he stated. Their bond was not only personal but also deeply rooted in their shared musical journey.
Unique Musical Legacy
Hussain's ability to integrate Western musical influences into his tabla playing set him apart. "This is one musician who is just irreplaceable. He was a complete musician – the finest tabla player of his time who took the tabla to a completely different level," Khan remarked. His experiences in the West enriched his music, making it distinctively global.
The sitarist reminisced about their collaborative jugalbandis and highlighted Hussain's talent for mentoring young artists. "Definitely he will be in the highest place in the heavens because people like him are very rare to walk this planet," Khan added, emphasising Hussain's lasting impact on aspiring tabla players worldwide.
A Global Cultural Icon
Mira Kaushik, a cultural artist based in London, also paid homage to Hussain. She first encountered him during a captivating performance in Mumbai in 1978. "He kept on returning in my life as the grandest performer and fabulous, warmest communicator," she recalled from her travels in Kerala.
Kaushik praised Hussain's multifaceted talents and his role as a cultural ambassador. "He was blessed with the 360 degrees of talent and abilities to become the greatest son of Saraswati," she noted. His participation in local events like Ganapati and Haji Ali showcased his deep connection to Mumbai.
Hussain's contributions to Indian culture were profound yet humble. Kaushik described him as an iconic figure whose "musical treasures" will endure through time. His legacy continues to inspire musicians and audiences alike across the globe.
