USD 55 Million Initiative to Revamp Notre Dame Area into a Green Oasis as Part of Paris Eco Plan

Paris is preparing for a significant eco-transformation as Notre Dame Cathedral reopens in December. The city plans to invest 50 million euros ($55 million) to transform the area around the cathedral into a green oasis. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance Paris's environment, following the Olympics, by integrating nature into its historic sites and busy streets.

The redesign around Notre Dame will create 1,800 square meters of green space and plant 160 trees. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo highlighted that this project aims to "better highlight our beautiful cathedral and do it justice, while respecting its history." The underground parking area will be converted into a visitor space with amenities, and the adjacent quays of the Seine will be revitalised.

Eco-Friendly Plans for Paris Landmarks

Paris's Champs-Elysees is undergoing a 30-million-euro renovation to enhance its beauty. The project includes updating sidewalks, tree bases, and gardens. With 150 proposals in place, the goal is to add more green spaces while preserving its historic charm as "the most beautiful avenue in the world."

The Arc de Triomphe's roundabout will see traffic lanes reduced to create a calmer environment. The central ring will be widened for better accessibility. Additionally, Avenue de la Grande Armee will be transformed into a green boulevard, reconnecting it with the Bois de Boulogne forest.

Place de la Concorde will also undergo changes between 2026 and 2027. A dozen architectural experts are involved in preserving its historical significance while aligning it with modern eco-friendly goals. The redesign aims to introduce more greenery and reduce traffic.

Controversy Surrounding the Eiffel Tower

A dispute has arisen over the future of the Eiffel Tower between Mayor Hidalgo and Culture Minister Rachida Dati. Hidalgo wants to keep the Olympic rings on the tower until at least 2028, arguing they represent the "festive spirit" of the successful Paris Olympics. Dati opposes this, claiming it turns the tower into a political tool for Hidalgo's mayoral campaign.

Dati has pushed for the Eiffel Tower to be classified as a full historical monument, which would add bureaucratic layers and potentially hinder Hidalgo's plans. She argues that such changes require proper consultation due to the tower's heritage status.

Louvre Museum's Green Initiative

The Louvre Museum is set for an eco-friendly transformation under the "Louvre 2030" project. Although details are limited, plans include redesigning Place du Louvre to manage visitor crowds better and provide a more serene environment. This initiative aims to accommodate increasing visitor numbers while enhancing green spaces around the museum.

The Notre Dame project will unfold in two phases: the first phase focuses on the parvis and surrounding streets by 2027; the second phase includes renovating Square Jean-XXIII by 2030. A belvedere will offer panoramic views of Ile Saint-Louis and the Seine, enriching visitors' experiences.
