US Raises Alarm Over North Korean Military Support for Russia's Ongoing War in Ukraine

The United States and its allies have expressed concern over North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, as well as its growing military support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict. A senior US official, Kurt Campbell, noted these concerns but could not confirm Ukrainian claims that North Korean soldiers were fighting for Moscow. This follows discussions with South Korean and Japanese officials on reviving international pressure on North Korea.

US Concerns Over North Korean Support for Russia

Earlier this week, the US, South Korea, and Japan, along with eight Western nations, announced plans to form a multinational team. This team aims to monitor the enforcement of sanctions against North Korea. The move comes after Russia vetoed a UN resolution in March, effectively ending UN experts' monitoring of Security Council sanctions on North Korea. Western nations accused Russia of shielding its arms purchases from Pyongyang to support its war in Ukraine.

North Korea's Military Support for Russia

Campbell mentioned indications that North Korea was increasing its supply of materials like artillery and missiles to aid Russia's war efforts in Ukraine. He stated that this support was "creating further instability in Europe." The US is still assessing reports about North Korea sending personnel to assist Russia. "We are concerned by them and...we agreed that we will continue to monitor the situation closely," Campbell said regarding these claims.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that North Korea is sending military personnel to support Russia's war effort, though he did not provide details. Ukrainian media reported that six North Koreans were among those killed after a Ukrainian missile strike in the partially occupied eastern Donetsk region on October 3.

Rising Tensions on the Korean Peninsula

North Korea has been making increasingly provocative threats against South Korea. These include accusations of South Korean drones dropping anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang and threats of retaliation if it happens again. On Tuesday, North Korea demolished unused road and rail routes linking it with South Korea, showcasing its anger towards South Korea's conservative government.

Tensions have escalated since 2022 as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un used Russia's war on Ukraine as an opportunity to increase weapons testing and threats. In response, Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo have strengthened their combined military exercises and enhanced their nuclear deterrence strategies involving strategic US assets.

Diplomatic Reactions and Regional Concerns

Following talks with Campbell and Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Masataka Okano, South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong Kyun condemned North Korea's "intentional moves to create tensions." He stated that the countries agreed to maintain a strong South Korea-US combined posture to respond firmly to North Korean provocations and enhance security cooperation through close coordination between South Korea, the US, and Japan.

The diplomats issued a joint statement condemning North Korea for its nuclear and missile developments, deepening military cooperation with Russia, and various illicit activities funding its weapons programme. They highlighted the United States' "ironclad" commitment to defend its allies. The statement also reflected growing regional tensions with China.

The diplomats expressed opposition to "any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in Indo-Pacific waters" and "unlawful maritime claims in the South China Sea." They criticised China's recent drills around Taiwan and stressed that "no further actions should be taken that could undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."
