US warns Iran of more attacks if American forces targeted in Mideast

The United States has warned Iran and its armed militias that it will conduct more attacks if American forces in the Middle East continue to be targeted, but it does not want an open-ended military campaign across the region.

After a series of retaliatory strikes over the weekend, the United States issued a stern warning to Iran and its affiliated militias, emphasizing that it will conduct additional attacks if American forces in the Middle East continue to face threats. However, the US clarified that it does not seek an "open-ended military campaign" across the region.

US and Iran: A brewing conflict in the Middle East

Sullivan Delivers Warnings

Jake Sullivan, President Joe Biden's national security adviser, conveyed the warnings during interviews with various TV news shows. He asserted that Iran should anticipate "a swift and forceful response" if it directly retaliates against the US, rather than through its proxies.

Recent Strikes and Targets

The US and Britain recently launched strikes against 36 Houthi targets in Yemen, responding to repeated attacks on American and international interests by the Iran-backed militants. Additionally, an air assault in Iraq and Syria targeted Iranian-backed militias and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for a drone strike that killed three US troops in Jordan.

Potential for Future Attacks

Sullivan acknowledged the possibility of future attacks from Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria, as well as from the Houthis. He emphasized that President Biden has instructed commanders to be prepared to respond to further attacks.

US Response Strategy

While pledging a sustained response to new assaults on Americans, Sullivan clarified that the US does not intend to engage in an open-ended military campaign. However, he affirmed that additional strikes and actions will be taken to convey a clear message that the US will retaliate when its forces are attacked or its personnel are killed.

Targets Hit in Iraq and Syria

The US attack on dozens of sites in Iraq and Syria struck over 85 targets at seven locations, including command and control headquarters, intelligence centers, rockets and missiles, drone and ammunition storage sites, and other facilities linked to the militias or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force.

No Confirmation of Civilian Casualties

Sullivan stated that the US military currently has no confirmation of civilian casualties resulting from the strikes in Iraq and Syria. He expressed confidence in the validity of the targets hit, as they were essential for containing the weaponry and personnel responsible for attacking American forces.

Escalation of Attacks

Some of the militias involved have posed a threat to US bases for years, but their assaults intensified following Israel's war with Hamas. The Houthis, in particular, have conducted frequent missile or drone attacks against commercial and military ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, despite the presence of an international force to protect vessels in the region.

US Strikes in Yemen

US strikes overnight Sunday targeted six provinces of Yemen held by the Houthi rebels, including the capital Sanaa. The Houthis did not provide an assessment of the damage, but the US reported hitting underground missile arsenals, launch sites, and helicopters used by the rebels.

Iran's Warning Over Cargo Ships

Amid the tensions, Iran issued a warning to the US regarding two cargo ships, the Behshad and Saviz, which are suspected of serving as operating bases for Iranian commandos. The statement reflects Iran's growing unease over the US strikes across the region.

As the situation in the Middle East remains volatile, the US and Iran continue to engage in a delicate balancing act, seeking to deter attacks while avoiding a wider conflict. The region's stability hangs in the balance as both sides navigate the complex web of alliances and proxy forces.
