US Backs India's Bid For Permanent Seat At UNSC, Pushes For 'Reformed' Security Council
The United States has pledged its support for India to obtain a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council. endorsement was publicly acknowledged in a joint declaration by the Quad, consisting of India, Australia, Japan, and the United States.
"President Biden shared with Prime Minister Modi that the United States supports initiatives to reform global institutions to reflect India's important voice, including permanent membership for India in a reformed UN Security Council," a statement by White House said.

The statement highlighted the collective effort to reform global institutions to more accurately represent India's significant role, signaling a push towards making the UN Security Council more inclusive and reflective of the modern geopolitical landscape.
The White House conveyed that President Biden had discussed with Prime Minister Modi the United States' backing of India's inclusion as a permanent member in a reformed UN Security Council.
The declaration, known as the 'Wilmington Declaration,' emphasises the critical necessity of reforming the UN Security Council. The aim is to transform it into a body that is more representative, inclusive, transparent, efficient, effective, democratic, and accountable.
"Together, with our global and regional partners, we continue to support international institutions and initiatives that underpin global peace, prosperity and sustainable development. We reiterate our unwavering support for the UN Charter and the three pillars of the UN system," the joint declaration read.
"We will reform the UN Security Council, recognizing the urgent need to make it more representative, inclusive, transparent, efficient, effective, democratic and accountable through expansion in permanent and non-permanent categories of membership of the UN Security Council. This expansion of permanent seats should include representation for Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean in a reformed Security Council," it added.
The Quad members have advocated for the inclusion of new permanent seats on the UNSC, proposing that these seats should represent regions such as Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
