US Strikes Continue Against Houthi Rebels in Yemen

The US military carried out a series of strikes against Houthi rebel military sites in Yemen, targeting anti-ship missiles and aiming to disrupt their attacks on vessels in the Red Sea. Despite ongoing efforts, President Biden acknowledged that the attacks have not yet ceased, and the US remains committed to continuing the strikes.

In a recent development, US forces conducted their fifth strike against Iranian-backed Houthi rebel military sites in Yemen. This action comes as President Joe Biden acknowledges that the ongoing American and British bombardment has yet to deter the militants' attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, which have significantly disrupted global shipping.

US Steps Up Pressure on Houthi Rebels in Yemen

Precision Strikes Destroy Houthi Anti-Ship Missiles

The latest strikes, carried out by Navy fighter aircraft, successfully destroyed two Houthi anti-ship missiles that posed an imminent threat in the southern Red Sea. The US Central Command confirmed the operation through a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Biden Vows to Continue Strikes Despite Limited Success

Despite the ongoing Houthi attacks, President Biden remains committed to continuing the strikes. In a candid exchange with reporters before departing for a domestic policy speech in North Carolina, Biden acknowledged that while the strikes have not yet halted the Houthis' activities, they will persist.

Previous Round of Strikes and Designation of Houthis as Terrorists

Prior to the latest strikes, the US military launched a significant round of attacks on Wednesday night, targeting 14 Houthi-controlled sites with ship- and submarine-launched missiles. These strikes aimed to neutralize missiles deemed an imminent threat by the US Central Command.

Additionally, the Biden administration has designated the Houthis as specially designated global terrorists. This formal designation entails sanctions aimed at severing the group's access to financing sources while ensuring the continued flow of vital humanitarian aid to the impoverished population of Yemen.

Persistent Houthi Attacks Despite Sanctions and Military Action

Despite the imposition of sanctions and previous military strikes, including a large-scale operation involving US and British warships and warplanes that hit over 60 targets across Yemen, the Houthis continue to harass commercial and military ships.

The US has issued strong warnings to Iran, urging them to cease providing weapons to the Houthis. The Houthis have claimed responsibility for attacks on ships in the Red Sea, alleging links to Israel or their destination to Israeli ports.

Tenuous Links to Targeted Ships

However, as the attacks persist, the connections between the targeted ships and the stated justifications have become increasingly tenuous. The attacks have primarily targeted commercial shipping vessels transiting through the critical Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital route connecting markets in Asia and Europe.

International Collaboration for Maritime Security

In response to the ongoing threats, the US and its allies have formed Operation Prosperity Guardian to safeguard ship traffic in the region. Currently, warships from the United States, France, and the United Kingdom are actively patrolling the area.

Ongoing Commitment to Address the Situation

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby emphasized the US's unwavering commitment to continuing the strikes as long as necessary. He declined to provide specific details about future actions, stating that he would not "telegraph punches one way or another."
