US to Build Military Bases in Somalia, Boosting Security Amid Ongoing Threats

The US and Somalia collaborate to establish up to five military bases, supporting the Somali army in countering extremist threats and improving national security.

In a significant move to bolster Somalia's national army capabilities, the United States has announced plans to construct up to five military bases in the country. The agreement was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, between Somalia's defense minister and the US charge d'affaires.

Strengthening the Somali Military

The establishment of these new bases is particularly crucial as the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, known as ATMIS, is gradually reducing its presence in the country. The Somali military's Danab Brigade, formed in 2017 through a US-Somalia agreement, will be closely associated with the upcoming bases. The Danab Brigade has played a pivotal role as a quick-reaction force in countering the extremist group al-Shabab.

Addressing Ongoing Security Challenges

Despite progress in improving security, Somalia continues to face sporadic attacks from al-Shabab, including in public places. The group's recent attack inside a military base in Mogadishu resulted in the deaths of four Emirati troops and a Bahraini military officer. The construction of these new military bases aims to enhance the Somali army's capabilities in combating such threats and ensuring the nation's security.
