US Army Soldier Detained in Russia Awaiting Hearing on Theft Charges
The recent arrest of US Army Staff Sgt. Gordon Black in Russia has raised concerns amidst the tense relations between the US and Russia, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Black, who was stationed at Camp Humphreys with the Eighth Army in South Korea, traveled to Russia without the required clearance from the Defence Department, violating Pentagon policy that mandates service members to obtain approval for any international travel.

According to US officials, Black went to Russia to visit his girlfriend, a decision that has now resulted in his detention at a pretrial facility awaiting a hearing. The Army confirmed that Black's travel was not authorised, highlighting the strict travel restrictions under the current Defence Department guidelines. The State Department has long advised against travel to Russia for US citizens, especially military personnel, due to the heightened risks amidst the war in Ukraine.
Black's journey from South Korea to Russia was for personal reasons, as confirmed by Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith. Despite being married, Black met his girlfriend while stationed in South Korea. Their relationship reportedly faced troubles last fall, leading to a domestic dispute or altercation after which the woman left South Korea. The specifics of her departure and any involvement by Korean authorities remain unclear.
The US Embassy in Moscow was informed of Black's arrest for theft of personal property by an official from the Russian Ministry of Interior. This development adds Black to the list of Americans currently detained in Russia, including high-profile cases like Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich, whom the US government has designated as wrongfully detained.
Black's military career began in 2008, with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. His unexpected detour to Russia instead of returning directly to the US from South Korea has now complicated diplomatic efforts between the two countries. The incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to travel policies set forth by the Pentagon, especially in regions where geopolitical tensions are high.
The situation is a stark reminder of the complexities facing US citizens detained abroad, particularly in countries where diplomatic relations are strained. As efforts continue for the release of detained Americans, Black's case serves as a cautionary tale for service members about the consequences of unauthorized international travel.
