The United States of America (USA) and Russia have agreed to form high-level official teams aiming at negotiating peace in Ukraine and fostering economic cooperation. The announcement was made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The meeting, held in Saudi Arabia, marked a significant shift in American foreign policy under President Donald Trump.

The discussions between top diplomats from the US and Russia were intended to improve relations between the two nations, which have reached their lowest point in decades. Ukrainian representatives were absent from these talks, even as their country continues to lose ground against Russian forces in an ongoing conflict that began nearly three years ago.

Ukraine's Stance on Peace Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that his nation will not accept any outcomes from these discussions unless Kyiv is involved. European allies have also voiced concerns about being excluded from the negotiations. The absence of Ukrainian officials highlights the complexities surrounding these diplomatic efforts.

The meeting included key figures such as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. It was anticipated to focus on mending ties between the two countries beyond the immediate issue of Ukraine. Both sides agreed to restore staffing levels at their embassies in Washington and Moscow, aiming to support peace talks and broader bilateral relations.

However, Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign affairs advisor, mentioned on Russia's Channel One that no date has been set for this summit yet, and it is "unlikely" to occur next week.
