Tragic Airplane Crash Claims the Life of US Rep. Mary Peltola's Husband in Western Alaska
Eugene 'Buzzy' Peltola Jr., husband to US Representative Mary Peltola, was killed when his Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub crashed under mysterious circumstances after dropping off a hunter about 65 miles northeast of St.Marys, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
The latest in a series of aviation accidents involving political figures and their families in the United States has claimed the life of Eugene Peltola Jr., husband to US Rep. Mary Peltola, in western Alaska. The tragedy underscores the inherent risks associated with air travel in Alaska, a state where flights are commonplace due to its limited road infrastructure.
Tragic Loss

Eugene Peltola Jr., affectionately known as "Buzzy" by those close to him, died following an airplane crash earlier this week. His demise was confirmed by Anton McParland, chief of staff for his wife, Congresswoman Mary Peltola. "We are devastated to share that Mary’s husband...passed away earlier this morning following a plane accident in Alaska," McParland said on Wednesday.
Returning Home
Mary Peltola is a Yupik who made history last year when she became the first Alaska Native elected to Congress. Following her husband's death, she is returning home to be with family during this difficult time. The statement from McParland also requested privacy for the grieving family.
A Mysterious Crash
The aircraft involved in the fatal incident was identified as Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub which appears to have crashed under unknown circumstances upon takeoff after Buzzy had dropped off a hunter and equipment about 65 miles northeast of St. Marys according to Jennifer Homendy, National Transportation Safety Board chairperson.
Pilot Identified
Buzzy was identified as both pilot and sole occupant of the plane by Alaskan State Troopers who released an official statement regarding his untimely passing at age 57. Two hunters present at but not involved with the scene provided medical assistance until authorities arrived.
This tragic event is a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with frequent air travel in Alaska, a state where such transportation is often unavoidable due to its limited road system. It also adds to the growing list of fatalities involving politicians or their loved ones in aviation accidents within the nation's largest state.
The loss of Eugene Peltola Jr. will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications beyond his immediate family, given his wife's influential role as an elected representative and their shared commitment to serving their community. As investigations into the cause of this tragic accident continue, there are hopes that lessons can be learned to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in future.
In conclusion, while this tragedy has cast a shadow over Alaskan politics and highlighted once again the dangers faced by those who must rely on air travel within the region, it is hoped that it will also serve as a catalyst for increased safety measures and protocols within Alaska's aviation industry.
