US Finds Algeria's UN Resolution on Israel's Rafah Action Unhelpful

The United States has expressed its stance on a new UN Security Council resolution proposed by Algeria, which calls for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and an end to Israel's military operations in Rafah. The draft, circulated among the council's 15 members following urgent consultations on the escalating conflict, has been met with skepticism by the US. Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood emphasized that another resolution might not alter the situation on the ground. Instead, the US is advocating for a temporary halt in hostilities and the release of hostages taken during Hamas's incursion into southern Israel on October 7, aiming for a long-term resolution to the seven-month conflict.

US Critiques Algerias UN Proposal

Algeria's move comes as Israel intensifies its military actions in Rafah, a city where over a million Palestinians sought refuge from the broader Gaza offensive. With most having fled and humanitarian conditions worsening, the UN warns that no area in Gaza remains safe. The proposed resolution underscores the need for compliance with prior council resolutions, demanding open border crossings and humanitarian aid access for Gaza's 2.3 million inhabitants in need.

The draft resolution also calls for all parties to respect the cease-fire and seeks the release of all hostages. Despite hopes for a swift vote, possibly even within a day of its circulation, US opposition casts doubt on its future. Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that "life is in balance."

Historically, the United States has vetoed several resolutions calling for a cease-fire in Gaza but abstained from voting on a temporary halt during Ramadan. The current draft condemns the indiscriminate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure and reiterates demands for all parties to adhere to international laws protecting civilians. The resolution labels the dire situation in Gaza as a threat to regional and international peace and security, expressing grave concern over the spreading famine and suffering of Palestinians in Rafah.

As diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes, the international community watches closely, hoping for a breakthrough that could lead to a cessation of hostilities and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
