US President Trump Hosts Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Amid Regional Tensions

US President Donald Trump recently hosted Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir at the White House. This meeting occurred shortly after a military conflict between India and Pakistan. The luncheon was held behind closed doors amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran, with Trump considering possible US involvement. Geo News reported the meeting, but details of their discussions remain undisclosed.

Trump Hosts Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir

The invitation to Munir is seen as a significant diplomatic achievement by officials in Islamabad, as noted by the Dawn newspaper. Historically, it is uncommon for a US president to host a foreign army chief for lunch. Previous instances involved Pakistani leaders who also held presidential roles, such as Ayub Khan, Zia ul-Haq, and Pervez Musharraf.

Diplomatic Engagements and Regional Tensions

During a phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump invited him to stop in the US on his return from Canada. However, Modi declined due to prior commitments, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Modi informed Trump that India and Pakistan had ceased military actions after direct talks without US mediation.

India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. This operation targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan-controlled areas, leading to four days of intense clashes. The hostilities ended on May 10 after military leaders from both countries agreed to halt actions.

Pakistan's Stance and Counterterrorism Efforts

Munir addressed the Pakistani-American community in Washington, urging India to engage with Pakistan civilly rather than seeking regional dominance. He denied allegations of Pakistan's involvement in the Pahalgam attack and accused India of violating international borders.

Munir also expressed Pakistan's support for Iran in its conflict with Israel while backing US efforts to de-escalate tensions. "We want this war to end immediately," he stated. His visit strengthened Pakistan's counterterrorism partnership with the US, particularly against the Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) group.

Gen Michael Kurilla of US Central Command praised Pakistan as a "phenomenal partner" in combating ISIS-K. He highlighted successful operations along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, supported by US intelligence, which resulted in capturing high-value targets like Mohammad Sharifullah.

Protests and Political Dynamics

Munir's interaction at Washington’s Four Seasons Hotel attracted attention from both supporters and protesters. Demonstrators aligned with Imran Khan's opposition party called for democratic reforms and the release of jailed leaders outside the venue.

The strengthened counterterrorism collaboration between Pakistan and the US was underscored by Gen Kurilla's statements to Congress. He noted that Pakistani operations had dismantled IS-K’s presence in border regions, playing a crucial role in countering terrorism in Central and South Asia.

The meeting between Trump and Munir highlights ongoing diplomatic engagements amid regional tensions. It underscores the complex dynamics involving India, Pakistan, and broader geopolitical interests.
