US President Donald Trump Targets Remote Antarctic Island With Tariff—Penguins React, Sort Of
US President Donald Trump has announced a fresh wave of tariffs on imported goods, targeting several countries around the world. This includes a 10 per cent tariff on imports from a group of uninhabited volcanic islands near Antarctica - Heard Island and McDonald Islands - which are officially Australian territory.
These remote islands, located in the southern Indian Ocean, are mostly home to glaciers, penguins, and seals. There are no people living there, and there is no major trade between them and the US. Still, the announcement listed them alongside mainland Australia for the new tariff rules.

The unusual mention quickly caught the attention of internet users and caused a flood of memes and jokes on social media, especially on X, formerly Twitter. Many posts joked about the idea of the US placing tariffs on animals like penguins.
One viral meme showed animated penguins holding protest signs saying "No Tarifs", with the word spelled differently on each sign. Another meme featured an angry cartoon penguin holding a toy gun, with the caption "Peace Was Never An Option".
A popular video showed penguins with backpacks "leaving" the island. The caption read: "Penguins leaving Heard Island and McDonald Island. Is THIS what you voted for?"
Many people questioned the logic behind the tariff, saying the islands have no exports or industries. Experts also pointed out that while the US may be sending a political message to Australia, targeting these remote islands had little economic impact.
Still, online, the penguins have become unlikely stars - and a symbol of confusion in international trade.
