US President Donald Trump Says Saudi Arabia's One Move Would End Russia-Ukraine War ‘Immediately’
During a virtual address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Donald Trump expressed surprise that Saudi Arabia and other OPEC nations hadn't reduced oil prices before his election. He believes lower oil prices could swiftly end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump stated, "I am also going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil. You have to bring it down which, frankly, I am surprised they didn't do before the election."
Trump also highlighted the role of high oil prices in prolonging the war between Russia and Ukraine. He suggested that if these prices were lowered, it would lead to an immediate resolution of the conflict. The former US President remarked, "Right now, the price is high enough that the war will continue. You have to bring down the oil price, you have to end that war."

Impact on Global Interest Rates
In addition to addressing oil prices, Trump called for a reduction in global interest rates. He argued that with decreased oil costs, interest rates should fall worldwide. Trump said, "With oil prices going down, I'll demand that interest rates drop immediately and likewise they should be dropping all over the world."
Before his Davos speech, Trump reiterated his call for an immediate resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He warned of potential economic repercussions for Russia through taxes, tariffs, and sanctions if the situation persists.
Trump's Relationship with Russia
Trump has often spoken about his positive relationship with Russia and its people. Despite political tensions, he maintained admiration for them and recalled their significant contribution during World War II. On Truth Social, he stated, "I'm not looking to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people and always had a very good relationship with President Putin."
The ongoing war began in January 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine following Ukraine's decision to join NATO. Since then, over 14,000 civilians have died and millions have been displaced due to this conflict.
Historical Context of Conflict
The invasion by Russia was partly driven by demands for guarantees from NATO against military activities in eastern Europe and Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin views Ukraine as influenced by Western powers.
Trump's comments at Davos reflect his belief that OPEC nations bear some responsibility for the situation in Ukraine due to their control over oil pricing. He emphasised that millions of lives are being lost because of this ongoing conflict.
