Reportedly, several rounds of gun shots were attempted at the US President, but he ducked and saved his live. Reacting swiftly, his security covered him to save his life. A security officer knocked down the assailant on the spot.

Ahead of resignation, Cheatle faced a lot of criticism and was blasted by members of a House committee during a hearing on the Secret Service's actions at the time of attack on Donald Trump on July 13.

At that hearing, Cheatle first refused to resign, saying she was the best qualified officer to head Secret Services, an agency responsible for protecting the US President, Vice President, their family.

But on the second day of hearing, Cheatle agreed to step down. In a letter to Secret Service staff, she said, "In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that, I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director."

"The Secret Service's solemn mission is to protect our nation's leaders and financial infrastructure. On July 13th, we fell short on that mission," Cheatle wrote.

"The scrutiny over the last week has been intense and will continue to remain as our operational tempo increases. As your Director, I take full responsibility for the security lapse."
