US Plane Crash: Did Helicopter’s Failure To Send ADS-B Data Cause The Midair Collision?

A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet, operating as American Airlines Flight 5342, collided midair with a U.S. military Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while approaching Runway 22 at Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) around 9 p.m. local time on Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed. The flight had departed from Wichita, Kansas earlier in the evening.

Is It The Cause of the Accident?

US Plane Crash

According to Flightradar24, which tracks global air traffic, the collision involved American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. military H-60 helicopter. A post, citing the FAA, on its X account claims that the helicopter was not broadcasting ADS-B data (meaning it was not transmitting its position, altitude, or speed to air traffic controllers or nearby aircraft). The last ADS-B signal from the CRJ700 was received at 01:48 UTC.

What Does It Mean?

ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) is a tracking system that enhances situational awareness by providing real-time aircraft positioning to air traffic control and other aircraft. The lack of ADS-B data means:

    • The helicopter may not have been equipped with an ADS-B transponder.
    • The transponder may have been turned off or malfunctioning.
    • The helicopter was in restricted airspace, where ADS-B usage is not mandatory.

This could have contributed to the collision by reducing visibility and awareness for both pilots and air traffic controllers. However, the concerned authorities have not revealed the exact cause for the collision and also details about the fatalities.

    The Crash and Emergency Response

Following the midair collision, the aircraft crashed into the Potomac River, near Reagan National Airport, officials confirmed. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services deployed fireboats to the crash site and are actively engaged in rescue and recovery operations.

The D.C. Fire Department confirmed the incident on X, stating: "Confirmed small aircraft down in Potomac River vicinity Reagan National Airport. Fireboats on scene."

    Airport and Government Response

    • Reagan National Airport announced that all takeoffs and landings had been suspended, though the terminal remains open.
    • U.S. Vice President urged citizens to pray for those involved, saying: "Please say a prayer for everyone involved in the mid-air collision near Reagan airport this evening. We're monitoring the situation, but for now, let's hope for the best."
    • Senator Ted Cruz confirmed fatalities but did not specify the number. He posted: "While we don't yet know how many on board were lost, we know there are fatalities. Please join Heidi and me in praying for all involved as search and rescue efforts continue."

    Investigation On

U.S. law enforcement agencies have stated that a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision. Further updates will be provided as more details emerge.
