US Navy warship shoots down Iranian-made drone near Bab el-Mandeb Strait
A US Navy warship shot down an Iranian-made drone near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the latest in a string of threats from Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.
A US Navy warship, USS Carney, shot down an Iranian-made KAS-04 drone near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Wednesday. The drone was deemed to be a threat as it flew within 1,500 yards of the USS Dwight D Eisenhower aircraft carrier the previous day. The drone ignored multiple warnings to stay away from the ship and was eventually shot down over water in the southern Red Sea.

Heightened Tensions in the Region
The Red Sea is a key trade route for global shipping and energy supplies, and the US Navy has stationed multiple ships in the area since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7. The recent drone incidents have heightened tensions in the region, and the US Navy has warned that it will take all necessary measures to protect its ships and personnel.
Previous Drone Incidents
Earlier this month, another Navy destroyer, the USS Thomas Hudner, shot down a drone that was heading toward the ship as it sailed in the southern Red Sea. In both incidents, the drones were shot down over water.
Ensuring Safety of Navigation
The US Navy has emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of navigation in the Red Sea and has called on all parties to respect international law and norms. The downing of the drones sends a clear message that the US will not tolerate any threats to its ships or personnel.
Maintaining Regional Stability
The US Navy's actions in the Red Sea are part of its efforts to maintain regional stability and ensure the free flow of commerce. The US has a long-standing commitment to the security of the region and will continue to work with its partners to deter threats and promote peace.
