White House Hosts Japan's PM with Koi Pond Themed State Dinner

In a display of diplomatic elegance and cultural homage, the White House is set to host a state dinner that not only celebrates the enduring friendship between the United States and Japan but also showcases a unique blend of traditions from both nations. First Lady Jill Biden has taken a creative leap by transforming the State Floor into what she describes as a "vibrant spring garden" for the occasion. This event, scheduled for Wednesday, will honor Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan, marking President Joe Biden's first state dinner of the year.

Koi Pond Theme at US-Japan Dinner

The evening's preparations include a departure from the traditional red carpet, opting instead for a floor covering designed to emulate the serene beauty of a koi pond. This choice reflects the symbolism of koi fish in Japanese culture, representing friendship, peace, luck, and perseverance. The dinner is an integral part of U.S. diplomacy, extended only to the nation's closest allies, with Japan being acknowledged for the fifth time as a cornerstone of U.S. policy in the Indo-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Kishida's official visit underscores the strategic partnership between the two countries. The guest list for the evening includes over 200 individuals who have ties to both nations, spanning sectors such as politics, government, business, and entertainment. The menu for the night is a testament to the spring season in both Japan and the United States, featuring house-cured salmon inspired by a California roll, dry-aged rib eye steak accompanied by shishito pepper butter, and a dessert of salted caramel pistachio cake with matcha ganache and cherry ice cream.

Decorations for the event will include an array of Jill Biden’s favorite flowers like sweet pea, roses, and peonies, complemented by imported cherry blossoms. The tables in the East Room will be adorned with place settings from the administrations of Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush, with glass and silk butterflies adding a whimsical touch.

The evening's entertainment will feature performances by Paul Simon, one of Jill Biden’s favorite artists. Simon’s inclusion serves as a special tribute to Prime Minister Kishida, who is also an admirer of Simon’s work. Simon’s illustrious career spans six decades and includes numerous accolades such as multiple Grammys and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Additional musical performances will be provided by "The President's Own" Marine Band Chamber Orchestra, the Army Rolling Strings, and the Air Force Strings.

This state dinner not only serves as a platform for diplomatic engagement but also as an opportunity to celebrate the cultural ties that bind Japan and the United States. It highlights the importance of these gatherings in fostering international relationships and mutual understanding. Prime Minister Kishida's visit is particularly significant as he becomes the fifth world leader honored by President Biden with a state dinner, following counterparts from France, South Korea, India, and Australia.
