Colombia Reverses Stance On Deportation Flights Amid Trump’s Retaliatory Tariff Threats

On Sunday, Colombia reversed its stance regarding the acceptance of deported nationals from the United States after initially refusing to allow flights, prompting Donald Trump to impose sanctions in retaliation.

The refusal led the Trump administration to introduce tariffs and other punitive measures against Colombia. Since Trump assumed office at the White House last Monday, deportation flights from the US have dominated headlines.

In response to Donald Trump's tariff threats, Colombian President Gustavo Petro arranged for the use of the presidential plane to facilitate the "dignified return" of Colombian nationals deported to the country, according to a statement from the President's office on Sunday.

"The Government of Colombia, under the direction of President Gustavo Petro, has made the presidential aircraft available to facilitate the dignified return of fellow nationals who were to arrive in the country this morning on deportation flights. This measure responds to the Government's commitment to guarantee dignified conditions. Under no circumstances have Colombians, as patriots and rights-holders, been or will be banished from Colombian territory," the statement read.

The Colombian government also announced the formation of a 'dedicated team' to ensure the "dignified treatment" of deported nationals.

"Additionally, the Government has convened a Unified Command Post (PMU) on migration, which will include representatives from the Defence Ministry, the People's Office, the Chancellor's Office, and the Presidency of the Republic. This body's objective is to establish and review protocols that ensure dignified treatment of deported Colombians, guaranteeing that procedures respect human rights and the integrity of each person," the statement added.

The Colombian authorities emphasised their commitment to ongoing dialogue with the United States to seek agreements that ensure respect and dignity for deported individuals.

"Likewise, the Government of Colombia maintains active conversations with the Government of the United States, seeking agreements that ensure minimum conditions of respect and dignified treatment for fellow citizens during deportation processes, recognising them as rights-holders," the statement said.

Colombia reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding its citizens and pledged to continue spearheading regional and international efforts to find humane and equitable solutions to migration challenges.

Following Colombia's reversal, the White House press secretary announced that the US would no longer impose sanctions or tariffs on the South American nation.

Donald Trump's tariff measures after Colombia's initial refusal

Colombia's policy shift came after US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent retaliatory "emergency tariffs" on Colombian imports, following President Gustavo Petro's decision to block US military deportation flights.

The standoff began when Colombia barred two US military flights carrying deported migrants and called on the United States to establish improved protocols for handling migrants.

Donald Trump and Gustavo Petro engaged in a series of exchanges on social media, defending their respective positions on migration. Petro accused Trump of failing to treat migrants with dignity and responded by announcing a 25 per cent increase in tariffs on US goods.

After Colombia rejected two US military aircraft carrying deported migrants, Trump issued sharp criticism and announced a series of sanctions targeting Colombia. These included a tariff on all imports from the country, a "travel ban" on Colombian citizens, and the revocation of visas for Colombian officials and their allies.

Petro, in his remarks, insisted that Colombian migrants should not be treated as criminals and refused to accept the US planes carrying deported individuals.

Following Trump's tariff measures, Petro stated on X that he had instructed the "foreign trade minister to raise import tariffs from the US by 25 per cent."
