US Government Contractor Accused Of Spying For Foreign Country: Justice Department
A US government contractor, Abraham Teklu Lemma, originally from Ethiopia and with top secret security clearance, has been arrested on espionage charges. He allegedly transmitted classified maps and images to a foreign government via an encrypted messaging app. The specific country he is accused of spying for remains undisclosed.
The US Justice Department has recently disclosed the arrest of a contractor working for the US government on espionage charges. The accused, Abraham Teklu Lemma, is alleged to have provided classified information to a foreign country which he obtained from his work computer system. Originally hailing from Ethiopia, Lemma had access to top secret and classified information due to his contracting roles with the departments of State and Justice.
Use of Encrypted Messaging

As per court documents, Lemma is believed to have used an encrypted messaging application for transmitting maps, photographs and satellite imagery to this undisclosed foreign government. However, these documents do not reveal the identity of the nation that Lemma was allegedly spying for. A spokesperson from the Justice Department declined any comments regarding this matter. Nevertheless, it is mentioned in these records that over the past eighteen months or so, Lemma has been travelling back and forth frequently to a country where he has familial ties.
Ethiopia: The Alleged Beneficiary
The New York Times was first in reporting about this arrest and identified Ethiopia as the probable recipient of such sensitive intelligence data. This claim seems plausible given Lemma's Ethiopian origin; however there hasn't been any official confirmation on this yet.
Accusation Details
Prosecutors allege that Lemma accessed numerous intelligence reports during his tenure at both departments. It’s further claimed that he copied data from them onto CDs and DVDs after downloading it all onto his personal storage devices. As such actions are considered serious offences under US law due its potential harm towards national security interests; they form basis for current charges against him.
Litany Of Charges
The charges levelled against Abraham Teklu Lemma include delivering national defence information in order to aid a foreign government as well as conspiring towards doing so along with willful retention of national defence information. These are serious allegations which, if proven, could lead to severe penalties including long-term imprisonment.
In conclusion, this case brings forward the dire need for stringent security measures and rigorous vetting processes in sensitive government departments. It also underlines the potential threats that encrypted messaging apps can pose when misused by individuals with access to classified information. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the constant vigilance required in safeguarding national secrets against both internal and external threats.
