US Stresses Fair, Transparent Legal Standards in Kejriwal Arrest Incident

Following the recent arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, India expressed its disapproval by summoning a senior US diplomat in New Delhi. The action came in response to comments made by a US State Department official regarding the legal proceedings against Kejriwal. The US, on its part, emphasized its stance on advocating for fair, transparent, and timely legal processes, a principle it believes should be universally accepted.

US on Kejriwal: Fair Legal Standards

During a State Department briefing, Spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed inquiries concerning the diplomatic engagement and the freezing of the Congress party's bank accounts. Miller highlighted the US's awareness of the challenges faced by the Congress party due to the freezing of their accounts, which could potentially hinder their campaign efforts in the upcoming elections. He reiterated the US's call for fairness and transparency in legal processes related to these matters.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officials had a meeting lasting over 30 minutes with Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena, during which they lodged a strong protest against the remarks made by the US State Department official. The discussion underscored India's concerns over external comments on its internal legal proceedings and emphasized the importance of respecting national sovereignty and judicial independence.

The Enforcement Directorate's arrest of Kejriwal is linked to allegations of corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22. This policy was later scrapped following accusations of irregularities.

The MEA has voiced strong objections to the US State Department spokesperson's comments on the matter, stressing that such remarks could potentially disrespect India's sovereignty and judicial processes. India maintains that its legal system is founded on an independent judiciary committed to delivering objective and timely justice, and any external commentary casting doubts on this framework is considered unwarranted.
