US Election 2024: How The Outcome Could Shape India’s Workforce And Innovation
The outcome of the 2024 US elections is poised to shape global politics in profound ways, with potential effects on India. Decisions by the incoming US leadership could impact international relations, economic policies and global security dynamics, influencing India's interests and partnerships. This makes the election results significant not only for the US, but also for countries worldwide, including India.
For Indian businesses and individuals, any shifts in US immigration laws or policies under the new leadership will be especially important. These changes could affect job opportunities, business expansion and the movement of skilled professionals-areas crucial to many in India.

A key area of comparison in this election will be the immigration policies of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, each with differing approaches that could shape opportunities for Indians and others globally. There are about 5.2 million Indian-Americans living in the US, making them the second-largest immigrant group. Of this population, around 2.3 million are eligible to vote. According to a recent survey by the Carnegie Endowment, 61 per cent of registered Indian-American voters say they plan to support Harris, while 32 per cent intend to vote for Trump, as reported by Hindu Business Line.
Trump's Roadmap to Deportation
Trump's approach focuses on strict enforcement, aiming to remove more than 11 million immigrants who are in the country without legal status. His plan is to gather more power within the president's office, so he can make decisions without always needing permission from Congress. This would allow him to act directly on issues as he sees fit.
This plan would greatly increase ICE detention centres-facilities where immigrants are held by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement-and create more than 1,000 new immigration courts to speed up case processing. The estimated cost could be as high as $315 billion to start, with ongoing expenses possibly reaching $88 billion each year if rolled out gradually. The American Immigration Council (AIC) warns that these extreme actions would put pressure on federal budgets and take money away from important public services, which would directly affect American taxpayers.
Besides the financial cost, Trump's plan shows a move towards a more forceful style of governing. By bypassing Congress and calling immigration an "invasion", he opens the door to actions that skip court approval and limit democratic control, similar to methods in authoritarian governments. This strategy would deeply affect communities, causing families to be separated and creating an atmosphere of fear, while also making it harder for people to speak out.
Harris's Pathway to Citizenship
Vice-President Harris, taking a different approach, supports a plan that brings both parties, the Democrats and the Republicans, together. She wants to boost funding for border security and create legal ways for eligible immigrants to gain citizenship. Her plan focuses on tackling the main reasons people migrate, promoting openness in the immigration process and working within the current systems of Congress and the courts.
Harris's approach supports economic stability by keeping immigrant workers in such key sectors as agriculture, construction and hospitality. Without immigrant workers, these sectors would face labour shortages, leading to higher food prices and increased housing costs. Her plan, which seeks support from both political parties, aims to support these industries while upholding democratic values. It ensures a fair approach that reflects America's commitment to opportunity and justice, according to Forbes.
As voters weigh these options, the way forward becomes clear. Harris's approach to immigration reform provides a lawful and cooperative solution that respects democratic values and considers the economic and social aspects of immigration. On the other hand, Trump's approach risks weakening democratic foundations in the name of reform, setting an example of unchecked presidential power.
Indian Companies and Individuals
Harris's softer approach, which includes options for citizenship, could bring stability and security to Indian families living in the US. In contrast, Trump's harsher border policies may make things harder, possibly causing challenges for Indian businesses and individuals, as reported by the Economic Times.
Harris's approach could offer Indian families a clearer path to legal residency and citizenship. On the other hand, Trump's policies may reduce opportunities for 'undocumented people', which could impact families who have lived in the US for a long time without legal status.
Harris's more compassionate approach could, possibly, make the immigration process simpler for Indian families dealing with challenges. In contrast, Trump's stricter standards and past policies may lead to increased scrutiny, making it tougher for Indians facing immigration issues.
Harris's plan to streamline legal immigration and keep work visas available could benefit Indian IT companies that depend on the H-1B visa programme to bring skilled Indian professionals to the US. In contrast, a Trump-led Administration may raise visa denial rates and limit family-based immigration, affecting Indian individuals and businesses.
Harris's approach could offer a sense of security to Indian residents in the US by targeting enforcement on criminal actions instead of widespread deportations. On the other hand, Trump's approach of mass deportations may cause worry among Indian communities.
Soon, we will find out the direction of US immigration policies once the election results come in. However, depending upon the outcome, there may be legal challenges questioning the election process or the accuracy of the voting data. We will have to wait and watch.
