US Election 2024: Could Kamala Harris Outshine Joe Biden Against Donald Trump?

In a recent CNN poll conducted by Social Science Research Solutions (SSRS), Vice-President Kamala Harris, an Indian-American politician, has been identified as a stronger contender with a better chance of retaining the White House against former President Donald Trump in the November presidential polls compared to her boss, President Joe Biden, as reported by India Today.

The poll results indicate a notable shift in support towards Harris following Biden's underwhelming performance in the first presidential debate held in Atlanta on June 27. This has led to increasing calls within the Democratic Party for Biden to consider stepping down and allowing another candidate to lead their electoral efforts.

Kamala Harris Might Outshine Joe Biden: Here's The Latest Buzz

According to the CNN poll, which surveyed registered voters, Donald Trump currently leads Joe Biden by six percentage points in a head-to-head matchup. However, in a hypothetical scenario pitting Kamala Harris against Trump, the race is much tighter, with Trump garnering 47% of support compared to Harris's 45%, as reported by NBC News.

This statistical margin falls within the poll's margin of error, indicating a virtual tie between the two candidates. The poll further details that Harris's relatively stronger showing against Trump can be partly attributed to broader support from key demographics. Specifically, among female voters, 50% favoured Harris over Trump, whereas only 44% preferred Biden over Trump in a similar matchup.

Additionally, Harris enjoys support from 43% of independent voters, compared to Biden's 34% in a matchup against Trump. Several other prominent Democrats have been mentioned as potential replacements for Biden, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, as per US Media report.

Each of these figures trails Trump by similar margins among registered voters, as indicated by the CNN Poll. Despite the internal discussions within the Democratic Party about potential leadership changes, Biden's campaign remains steadfast in his determination to continue in the presidential race, as per media reports.

However, acknowledging the complexities and risks involved in changing leadership midway through an election cycle, Democratic insiders are cautious about pursuing such a course of action. Meanwhile, the poll also reflects a notable increase in confidence among Republican voters regarding Donald Trump's electoral prospects.

Currently, 83% of Republicans believe that their party is better off with Trump as their candidate, marking a significant rise from 72% in January. Joe Biden's approval rating has dipped to a new low of 36%, with a substantial 45% of respondents expressing strong disapproval of his performance, which represents the highest disapproval rate recorded in CNN's polling history.

Regarding the poll results, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refrained from providing direct comments, emphasizing that such matters are best addressed by the campaign itself, as reported.

She stated, "I'm constrained to speaking directly to your poll and I get it and I hear the question. I got to be mindful, that is something for the campaign as you started saying, what the campaign has laid out their argument of the case. That is something for them to take up and that is something for them to answer," when questioned by reporters.

Finally, it is notable that former First Lady Michelle Obama continues to hold a significant lead over Donald Trump in hypothetical matchups, with an 11-point advantage according to an Ipsos poll. However, her office clarified earlier in the year that she would not be entering the presidential race for the current election cycle.
