Ro Khanna Supports US Choice to Abstain from Vetoing UN Resolution on Israel

Washington, Mar 31 - Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna recently spoke on Fox News, defending the Biden Administration's choice not to obstruct a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. This stance, according to Khanna, is pivotal for the United States as it seeks to strengthen its global coalition on this critical issue.

US Abstains from Veto at UN: Khanna Explains

Khanna highlighted that 14 countries within the Security Council have been advocating for a ceasefire and the prompt release of all hostages. The United States, previously the sole nation vetoing such calls, found its position counterproductive in forming effective multilateral coalitions. "We need to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin, to stand up to Chinese President Xi Jinping because we were isolating ourselves from allies we need," Khanna stated, emphasizing the strategic shift in U.S. foreign policy under President Joe Biden's leadership.

The congressman's comments come in the wake of criticism from former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who lambasted the Biden Administration for not vetoing the resolution. Pompeo argued that this abstention would not only please Hamas but also Iranian terrorists, the perpetrators of recent atrocities, and adversaries like Russia and China, while disillusioning U.S. allies.

In response to concerns about the potential impact on Biden's foreign policy popularity ratings, Khanna expressed optimism. He believes that public perception is likely to shift as people recognize the urgency of ending the conflict and securing lives on both sides. Khanna anticipates an improvement in Biden's approval ratings following a resolution to the war, drawing parallels with recent recoveries in his economic approval ratings.

This discussion underscores a fundamental philosophical divergence in U.S. foreign policy approaches: the contrast between unilateral action and alliance-building to confront global challenges. As tensions persist on the international stage, the Biden Administration's strategy aims at fostering cooperation and unity among global powers to address pressing issues effectively.
