US and Chinese Defence Chiefs to Hold Crucial Meeting in Singapore

In a significant development aimed at easing tensions and fostering dialogue, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin is slated to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Dong Jun, at the forthcoming Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. This encounter marks the first meeting between the two defence leaders since their phone conversation in April. The Pentagon's announcement of this meeting underscores a gradual thaw in relations between the United States and China, following a period of strained military-to-military communications triggered by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan in 2022.

US-China Defence Talks in Singapore

The Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual assembly of defence ministers and government officials from over 50 countries, serves as the backdrop for this pivotal meeting. This event comes at a time when China has intensified military drills around Taiwan, prompting the island to bolster its defense readiness. The drills were a response to Taiwan's new president, Lai Ching-te, calling for Beijing to acknowledge Taiwan's reality while ceasing its intimidation tactics. China, maintaining its claim over Taiwan and threatening unification by force if necessary, launched these exercises as a stark rejection of Lai's remarks.

The United States, adhering to federal law, remains committed to ensuring Taiwan's ability to defend itself. Amidst these developments, the US has urged China not to interpret Taiwan's political transition as a justification for aggressive actions. This stance was articulated by a defense official who wished to remain anonymous while sharing insights not yet public.

The re-engagement between the US and China follows a meeting between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in California last November, where the importance of open communication was emphasized. Admiral Dong Jun, who stepped into his role as China's minister of national defense in late December after his predecessor was removed, had previously discussed critical issues with Austin. Their conversation covered topics including the conflict in Ukraine, navigation freedoms in the South China Sea, Taiwan, and North Korea.

Austin's last interaction with a Chinese defence minister occurred in November 2022 during a regional defense minister meeting in Cambodia with Wei Fenghe. Notably, no US defence secretary has visited China since Jim Mattis in 2018, highlighting the significance of the upcoming discussions in Singapore.
