US Department of Homeland Security Organises Chartered Flight for Deportation of Indian Nationals

The United States recently arranged a chartered flight to deport Indian nationals who were residing illegally in the country. This action was carried out in collaboration with the Indian government, as stated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Kristie A. Canegallo, a senior official acting as Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, emphasised that migrants should not trust smugglers' false promises.

US Sends Back Indian Nationals via Charter Flight

The chartered flight departed for India on 22 October. DHS highlighted its ongoing commitment to enforcing US immigration laws by swiftly deporting individuals without legal grounds to stay. The department also encourages migrants to use legal channels for entry. Since June 2024, following the implementation of the Securing the Border Presidential Proclamation and Interim Final Rule, there has been a 55% reduction in encounters at the southwest border.

US Immigration Enforcement and Repatriation Efforts

In Fiscal Year 2024, DHS reported removing or returning over 160,000 people. They conducted more than 495 international repatriation flights to over 145 countries, including India. The department regularly collaborates with foreign governments globally to facilitate the repatriation of their nationals who lack legal status in the US.

DHS employs various strategies to curb irregular migration and promote safe and lawful pathways for migrants. These efforts also aim to hold transnational criminal networks accountable for smuggling and exploiting vulnerable individuals. Over the past year, DHS has deported individuals from numerous countries, such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Egypt, Mauritania, Senegal, Uzbekistan, China, and India.

The US government continues to take firm actions against illegal immigration while encouraging lawful migration routes. By working with international partners and employing diverse strategies, DHS aims to manage migration effectively and ensure compliance with immigration laws.
