Gaza's US-Built Humanitarian Aid Pier to Be Repaired After Rough Sea Damage

The US-built temporary pier, a critical lifeline for delivering humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, is set for repairs after being damaged by rough seas, the Pentagon announced on Tuesday. Over the forthcoming days, the structure will be dismantled and transported to Ashdod, a southern Israeli city, for necessary repairs under the supervision of the US Central Command. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh highlighted that the repair process would extend over a week before the pier can be reinstalled at Gaza's coast.

Gaza Pier Repair After Sea Damage

This setback comes amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has lasted nearly eight months, pushing the Palestinian population to the brink of famine. The pier has been pivotal in facilitating the delivery of food, water, and other essential supplies to Gaza's residents. Despite its recent operational commencement within the last two weeks, the pier has faced significant challenges, including injuries to three US service members and the beaching of four vessels due to adverse sea conditions.

Operations were temporarily halted last week when aid trucks were mobbed upon arrival from the pier, leading to a Palestinian man's death. This incident prompted coordination between the US military, the UN, and Israeli officials to identify safer routes for aid delivery. Despite these hurdles, the pier had successfully delivered over 820 metric tonnes of food aid to Gaza's shores by Friday before its suspension due to weather damage.

US officials have underscored that while the pier plays a vital role in aid delivery, it alone cannot meet the extensive needs of Gaza's population. They advocate for opening more checkpoints for humanitarian trucks and emphasize that at its full capacity, the pier could support 500,000 people, leaving a significant gap for the remaining 1.8 million residents. The US is also exploring airdrops as an alternative means of aid delivery.

The ongoing Israeli offensive in Rafah complicates efforts to deliver aid through key crossings essential for fuel and food supplies into Gaza. Although Israel claims to facilitate aid through another border crossing, Kerem Shalom, humanitarian organizations report difficulties in accessing and distributing aid due to military operations.
