US Commits New Patriot Missiles to Ukraine in a $6 Billion Defence Aid Package

In a significant move to bolster Ukraine's air defence capabilities amidst ongoing conflicts, the US has announced a substantial aid package valued at USD 6 billion. This package, as confirmed by Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin on Friday, includes additional Patriot missiles intended to replenish Ukraine's existing air defence systems. The aid extends further to include munitions for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and equipment designed to integrate Western air defence technologies with Ukraine's current arsenal, which largely comprises Soviet-era weaponry.

US Sends More Patriots to Ukraine

During a virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, which marked its second anniversary, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy underscored the critical need for at least seven Patriot systems to safeguard Ukrainian cities. "We urgently need Patriot systems and missiles for them," Zelenskyy emphasized, highlighting their potential to save lives in the immediate term. The group, led by the Pentagon and comprising about 50 countries, has been instrumental in coordinating international military support for Ukraine.

While Austin acknowledged the ongoing efforts to secure additional Patriot systems through international cooperation, he cautioned against viewing the Patriot system as a panacea for Ukraine's defence needs. The comprehensive aid package also encompasses High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), Switchblade and Puma drones, counter-drone systems, and artillery, addressing a broad spectrum of military requirements.

This latest tranche of support is funded through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which facilitates longer-term contracts with the defence industry. However, officials indicated that the delivery of these weapons might span several months or years. This announcement follows closely on the heels of a White House decision earlier in the week to expedite USD 1 billion in weapons and equipment to Ukraine, including a variety of ammunition and armoured vehicles.

The recent legislative actions by Congress have significantly contributed to this new wave of support for Ukraine. A bipartisan coalition led by House Speaker Mike Johnson successfully passed a USD 95 billion foreign aid package, which includes funding for Ukraine as well as for Israel and Taiwan. This legislative milestone has paved the way for the US to send over USD 44 billion in military aid to Ukraine since the onset of the conflict in February 2022.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain on the battlefield as Ukrainian forces grapple with ammunition shortages and Russian advancements. The situation is further complicated by the sidelining of Abrams M1A1 battle tanks provided by the US, which have become vulnerable to Russian drone warfare tactics.

The continuous international support through forums like the Ukraine Defence Contact Group highlights the global commitment to assisting Ukraine in its defence efforts. As the conflict persists, these aid packages represent a crucial lifeline for Ukrainian forces striving to counter adversarial gains and protect civilian areas from escalating hostilities.
